Karthigai Deepam brings the largest crowd of the year to Tiruvannamalai, reportedly around three million pilgrims. With the Maha Deepam expected on 24 November 2026, about six weeks away, accommodation near the temple and the hill is already going. Here is how to find a bed, what to expect to pay, and what to do if the town is full.
How to book now
Start with the platforms below and filter for free cancellation, because plans for a festival often change. Then widen the search: look at both ends of town, accept a simpler room, and add a night either side of the 24th, since many places have minimum stays. For guesthouses that are not online, ask on the phone or by message, confirm the price and what is included, and ask whether a small advance holds the room. Check the basics that matter on a long night walk: hot water, a working fan, a place to leave your bag on checkout day.

Which area to stay in
Ramana Nagar and the Girivalam road suit most visitors: calmer, greener, close to the ashrams and right at the foot of the hill where the walk begins. The old town near the Arunachaleswarar temple puts you steps from the rituals and the processions of the ten-day festival, but it is loud, crowded and hard to leave at the peak. On the Deepam day itself, vehicle entry to the centre is usually restricted, so where you can walk from matters more than the room. Rooms and prices
On ordinary weeks, guesthouses and homestays run about ₹500–1,500 a night, budget hotels ₹800–2,000, and comfortable air-conditioned hotels ₹2,500–5,000. Around the Deepam, expect rates well above these and a minimum stay or full advance payment. Ashram rooms are donation-based, but at Sri Ramanasramam they are limited and normally need an application two to four weeks ahead through the official website, so for the Deepam treat them as unlikely and plan a guesthouse nearby instead; the ashram itself is open to all during the day.
If the town is full
Stay one or two nights beyond the Deepam day rather than only the night itself, since leaving on the 25th is very difficult. If nothing is left in Tiruvannamalai, a larger town within a couple of hours, such as Vellore (about 85 km), is a fallback, though the roads and trains are heavily crowded and you should not plan a same-day return after the evening lighting. Plan how you will get in and out; our how to reach Tiruvannamalai guide covers every route. And remember the honest alternative: the weeks either side of the festival are the quiet time.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I stay for Karthigai Deepam in Tiruvannamalai?
The hill side of town (Ramana Nagar and the Girivalam road) is calmer and close to the start of the walk; the old town near the Arunachaleswarar temple is closest to the rituals but the loudest and most crowded. Whatever you choose, book as early as you can; rooms near both fill weeks to months ahead.
Is it too late to book a room for Karthigai Deepam 2026?
Not necessarily, but choice is shrinking. Search now, widen your area, stay one or two nights beyond the Deepam day, and take a refundable booking if you can. If nothing is left in town, a larger town within a couple of hours, such as Vellore (about 85 km), is a fallback, with the caveat that the roads are heavily congested on the day itself.
How much do rooms cost during Karthigai Deepam?
On ordinary weeks guesthouses are around ₹500–1,500 a night, budget hotels ₹800–2,000 and comfortable air-conditioned hotels ₹2,500–5,000. Around the Deepam, expect rates well above these, and expect to pay in advance.
Can I stay at Sri Ramanasramam for the Deepam?
Rooms are very limited and normally have to be applied for two to four weeks in advance through the ashram’s official website, stating the purpose of your visit. For the Deepam they are unlikely to be available, but you can stay in a guesthouse nearby and spend the day at the ashram, which is open to all.
How early should I arrive for the Deepam?
Arrive one to two days before the 24th, ideally earlier in the ten-day festival when the town is fuller of ceremony and not yet at its peak. Vehicle entry to the town is usually restricted on the main days, so plan to walk and carry only what you need.
What if I want a quiet Arunachala instead?
Then come a week or two before or after. The Deepam is the busiest time of the year, and the hill is calm in the weeks around it. See our best time to visit Tiruvannamalai guide.
The 24 November 2026 date and the festival timings follow current published sources and the traditional pattern of the day; the temple announces the detailed programme close to the festival, so confirm against the official Arunachaleswarar temple (HR&CE) notice. Last updated 13 October 2026.
