Sundarar, The Saint Who Argued with Shiva

đŸ”„ A Devotee Unlike Any Other

Most saints approach God with humility, reverence, and surrender. But Sundarar was different. He treated Lord Shiva as his closest friend, spoke to Him as an equal, and even demanded favors from Him. He did not just pray—he argued, negotiated, and sometimes even scolded Shiva!

Yet, Shiva loved him deeply. Unlike other devotees, Shiva accepted Sundarar’s friendship, played along with his demands, and granted him countless miracles.

How did a man who argued with Shiva become one of the greatest Nayanars (Tamil Shaivite saints)? Let’s explore the fascinating, rebellious, and miraculous life of Sundarar.

🌿 Sundarar’s Birth and Destiny

Sundarar was born in a high-caste Brahmin family in Tamil Nadu, but his soul belonged only to Shiva. Legends say that in a past life, he was a close companion of Shiva in Kailasa (Shiva’s celestial abode). When he was born as a human, Shiva made sure he never forgot their friendship.

As Sundarar grew up, he was well-versed in scriptures, poetry, and temple traditions. But deep inside, he was not interested in religious rituals—he only wanted to be with Shiva, his eternal friend.

đŸč The Wedding That Changed Everything

As Sundarar reached adulthood, his family arranged a grand wedding for him. The bride was beautiful, the ceremony was lavish, and everything seemed perfect.

But just before the marriage, an old man walked into the wedding hall and declared:

“This young man cannot marry! He is already my servant.”

The guests were shocked. Sundarar’s family asked the old man to prove his claim. The old man produced a palm-leaf document, claiming that Sundarar was bound to serve him for life. Sundarar was furious. He shouted at the old man:

“You are a liar! You are trying to ruin my wedding. I will take you to court!”

The case was taken before the village elders. They examined the document, and to everyone’s surprise, it looked authentic. Sundarar angrily said to the old man:

“You are nothing but a madman!” (Tamil: ‘Piththan’)

At that moment, the old man revealed his true form—it was Lord Shiva Himself! Sundarar fell to his knees, realizing his mistake. Shiva smiled and said:

“You called me ‘Piththan’ (madman), so from today, you will be known as ‘Vanthondan’ (The Servant Who Came by Force).”

From that moment, Sundarar abandoned worldly life and became Shiva’s closest companion.

đŸŽ¶ The Poet Who Negotiated with Shiva

Unlike other saints who renounced desires, Sundarar loved the pleasures of life. He wanted good food, fine clothes, and a comfortable life—but he also wanted to serve Shiva.

So, what did he do? He made Shiva pay for everything!

1. The Time He Asked Shiva for Gold

One day, Sundarar ran out of money while traveling. Instead of worrying, he went straight to Shiva and complained:

“Oh Lord, if you truly love me, give me gold right now!”

Shiva, amused by Sundarar’s audacity, told him:

“Go to the temple lake and take as much gold as you want.”

Sundarar ran to the lake and found heaps of gold coins in the water. He took what he needed and continued his journey!

2. The Time He Made Shiva Sign a Loan Agreement

On another occasion, Sundarar needed a large sum of money. He went to a wealthy man and asked for a loan. The man agreed—but only if Shiva signed as the guarantor!

Sundarar walked into the temple and said:

“Shiva, you are my friend! Come and sign this document.”

A divine voice echoed:

“Go ahead and sign my name.”

Sundarar did exactly that! Later, when the lender came to collect his money, Shiva Himself repaid the loan in gold.

3. The Time He Scolded Shiva for Giving Him Too Much Wealth

On another occasion, Shiva granted Sundarar so much wealth that he became arrogant. He forgot Shiva and started enjoying luxuries. But soon, thieves stole everything.

Realizing his mistake, Sundarar rushed back to Shiva and scolded him again!

“What kind of a friend are you?! You gave me wealth and let me lose it! Either take it all away or make sure I never forget you again!”

Shiva smiled and said:

“From now on, you will never desire wealth again.”

From that day, Sundarar only asked Shiva for what he truly needed.

đŸ”„ The Final Miracle: When Shiva Sent His White Elephant

When Sundarar grew old, he longed to return to Shiva’s celestial abode, Kailasa. He prayed:

“O my Lord, will you not take me back to where I truly belong?”

One day, as Sundarar sat in meditation, a magnificent white elephant descended from the sky. It was Shiva’s divine vehicle, sent to carry Sundarar to Kailasa.

Sundarar climbed onto the elephant and, with a final smile, vanished into the heavens. He had returned to his true home—by Shiva’s side, forever.

🕉 Lessons from Sundarar’s Life

Sundarar’s life was unique among saints. He did not renounce the world, nor did he live in extreme austerity. He showed us that Shiva is not just a distant god—He is a friend, a companion, and a beloved.

What can we learn from him?

✅ God is not just a Lord—He can also be a friend.
✅ It is okay to talk to God, complain, and even argue—He listens!
✅ Spiritual life does not mean abandoning joy—it means balancing devotion with daily life.
✅ Ultimate liberation comes when we surrender fully to divine grace.

“O Shiva, let me love You, laugh with You, and walk with You—just as Sundarar did.””
